E-Scooter Pilot Program Begins this Week
All across the Capital City, executives and auxiliary staff from e-scooter companies have spent the weekend in Tallahassee getting their bearings. It's finally time. This week, electric scooters are making their debut in TLH. After a long planning period involving Commission discourse, in-depth staff analysis, and legislative change, the City's pilot program to test how well the scooters fare begins Monday. Five companies have been chosen to participate in the pilot program; while initially only three were proposed to be included, a last-minute lobbying effort brought the final number up to five.
The five chosen companies for the City's pilot program are: Gotcha, Lime, Veoride, Bird, and Spin. Each company will place 200 scooters around Tallahassee, and you'll be able to rent one via that company's mobile app. The scooters are capable of speeds up to 15 MPH and can be used on sidewalks and bike lanes throughout the City of Tallahassee. There is one caveat to that, which is that FSU, FAMU, and TCC have requested not to be included in the pilot program, so no electric scooters will be allowed on their campuses. The pilot program brings us in line with other Florida cities where electric scooters are available, such as Tampa, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale
Lime has kindly provided us with a promotional code for the use of their e-scooters, just enter the code "TLHDevelopment" on their mobile app.
Chipotle Mexican Grill to Open on Gaines
Chipotle has submitted plans proposing a new restaurant at 699 West Gaines. This location will be the fourth to open in Tallahassee. With how regularly busy the West Tennessee Street Chipotle is, it seemed like only a matter of time until a second location for students would open up nearby.
The location is unique in that it will be the first Chipotle in Tallahassee to adhere to an urban layout. It directly abuts the roadway with minimal setback and will have no parking lot. There will be several metered parking spaces, but aside from that, customers are expected on foot or via bike (or scooter). It's an unusual setup for a business in Tallahassee, but a good one. It conveys that a neighborhood alone can support the business. It means walkability.
COT to Build new Water Quality Lab
If you don't drink Tallahassee tap, you're missing out. Our tap water has been deemed the best-tasting in Florida three times, and our 2019 Water Quality Report shows that our water is free and clear of contaminants. In keeping with this tradition, the City is constructing a new Water Quality Lab near the airport. This addition to our water delivery infrastructure will allow the most accurate analyses of water samples in order to ensure we are meeting EPA standards.
North Monroe Patients First set to Reopen
After several months of closure for renovations on their building, construction is almost complete at the Patients First on North Monroe. Improvements to the building include an entirely new facade and and a reconfigured interior. The location is expected to reopen on July 31st.
Triplex with Studio Apts Planned near Cascades
Our City has a desire for a variety of housing that fits the needs of all residents in Tallahassee. Consequently, developers are starting to get creative. One such developer is hoping to construct a triplex just East of Cascades Park. The plans for the structure are to build three 500sqft studio apartments above a carport on the bottom floor. The square footage of each unit may seem small, but it works for many.
